We are thrilled to bring this cherished choral classic to our audiences in a little-known format, written by Brahms himself. This work creatively broke new territory by being the first Requiem to use selected texts in German, rather than the traditional Latin mass. Instead of praying for the soul of the departed individual, this setting acknowledges the sorrow and loss for those that remain and then turns their focus to hope that is found in eternal life. Though it is the “German Requiem,” we are performing the work in English. We think Brahms would approve, since his compositional desire was to create a work that would be performed in the vernacular – accessible, non-traditional Biblical text and in a language understood by the people. Complementing the Requiem, we will also sing three contemporary works about loss and hope. Joining us in this concert are our High School Master Singers, which will feature 40 select singers from 11 area schools!
High School Master Singers sponsored by Geoff & Kelly Crowley Family Foundation. My Flight for Heaven is made possible by our Concert Partner, Dennis Reimer & Jeanie Kurka Reimer.
